The ‘Design Code’, Research Conference 2018 is the most prestigious International Design Research Conference in Sri Lanka. It is an international peer-reviewed conference focused on design research that seeks to examine the importance of design, design knowledge, design practice and to understand the connections between craft, research, theory, history, criticism and pedagogy. This year, The Research Conference will be part of the Design Code – Sri Lanka Design Week 2018.

The conference brings together researchers and practitioners who have worked on or thought on the idea of design from a variety of perspectives, disciplines and fields: Product design, Fashion design, Textile design, Graphic design, Industrial design, User Interface design, Interaction design, Visual Communication design, Media design, Advertising design, Ceramic design, Jewellery design, Shoes design etc.

With the intention of uplifting ‘Design in Sri Lanka’, the theme of the conference is to provide a platform towards the ‘Future of Integration in Design’. By sharing an integrated approach to design and critical debate in design. Under the main theme the abstracts will be presented in the following sub-themes:

  • Design Knowledge: Past, Present and Future
  • Design Knowledge and its futuristic approach
  • Design Methods and Tools
  • Design research theory and practice

Prof. Praveen Nahar

Prof Praveen Nahar is a Product Designer, Senior Faculty member in Industrial Design and the Head of Product Design Programme at National Institute of Design (NID). He also chairs International Programmes at NID.
The IIT Delhi Alumni, Praveen teaches and has research interests in Systems Thinking and its relation to Design Thinking, Design in the Public Domain, Rapid Product Development, Sustainable Design/Green Design, and Appropriate Technology. In recent years, he has been actively involved in academic projects with students that are related to Sustainability, Systems Thinking and Design that deals with complex issues ranging from healthcare to mobility.
With over 22 years of experience in design teaching and consultancy, Praveen has been involved at both micro and strategic level in various sectors of the industry, including Amul, Microsoft, Hyundai and the Indian Railways. He takes a keen interest in Sustainable Design. He took postgraduate courses in the subject at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands and has lectured and conducted design workshops and seminars on the subject all over the world. Praveen is also an Indian liaison for the O2 Ecological Design Global Network.


Ms. Sonia Manchanda

Sonia Manchanda is a design strategist, design thinker and a communication designer. A product of the National Institute of Design, she is the founding partner at Spread Design and Learning where she leads massive transformational projects. She is also the creator of Dream:in, a global open innovation and design thinking initiative that has been recognized as a global game changer. It is a human centered method for bottom up innovation and an open innovation project bridging academics and practice. Sonia’s work bridges the space between designing and learning to successfully deploy design as a tool for socio-economic transformation.
Some of her noteworthy projects include Bangalore Forward; a first ever Public Private initiative in India, Metro Rio; Experience design for the Metro Stations in Rio, Brazil and Manipal; Creation of the brand and the design for its various business among others.
For the last 20 years, she has led multiple interdisciplinary teams breezily through tough challenges – in the business design, branding, experience design and learning design spaces – converting practice into learning systems, blending practice and academics seamlessly; thinking through and demonstrating the highest level of craft.
